White Resistance to Somewhere in the Darkness Essay -- Somewhere in th

White Resistance to Somewhere in the Darkness  Ã‚  Ã‚   I feel compelled to revisit the one novel we have read that created the most resistance in me and would quite possibly do so in a significant population of white readers: Walter Dean Myers' Somewhere in the Darkness.   That the book is well written or valuable to readers is irrelevant here -- I enthusiastically grant both.   Of greater concern in this discussion is the notion of resistance to the book that could easily be encountered with a particular population of suburban, white readers, namely those who would seem to have the most in common with Jimmy and who, paradoxically, would most likely resist the book.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The readers who comprise this group have much in common with Jimmy. They are largely lower-middle class and come from either fatherless homes, what might easily be considered dysfunctional two-parent homes, and/or live with extended families in lieu of their natural parents.   In any case, the parent(s) are possibly absent from the home a great deal of the time, involved in a variety of dating practices and sexual promiscuity, caught up in illegal activity and often incarcerated or have been, oppressed by substance abuse of some type, and/or often living in an environment of either subtle or overt racism.   I have made no effort to quantitatively justify the particulars of this description though such a study would undoubtedly prove enlightening.   Rather, I assert this general description based on 12 years of experience of living in a white, lower middle-class suburb. In some ways, we could easily view these readers as insiders in t hat they share with Jimmy some elements of a common familial experience, but it is the cultural differences between white and ... ...ility: there is no hope for me or my kind.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A white reader's resistance to Walter Dean Myers' novel, Somewhere in the Darkness, is inevitable, particularly when that white reader has more in common with the protagonist than not.   It seems the closer in circumstance the white reader is to Jimmy, the more he/she might resist to his cultural differences because those underlying cultural differences cause Jimmy to act in ways that seem unlikely to a white reader.   The key is to be aware of those differences and be willing to see what Jimmy sees -- from his point of view.   If we are willing to do that, then Myers' work is a wonderful and effective way to learn not only about Jimmy and his culture but also about ourselves and the hopes we have for our lives. Becoming American

Dinesh D'Souza was born in Mumbai, India to parents from the state of Goa in Western India. He grew up in a middle-class family in Mumbai. His father was a chemical engineer; his mother is an office secretary. He was raised without great luxury, but neither did he lack for anything. He arrived in the United States in 1978, originally through a Rotary International program, attending Patagonia Union High School in Patagonia, Arizona, and then move to Dartmouth College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in English in 1983.In 1981, D'Souza published the names of officers of the Gay Student Alliance in an article for The Dartmouth Review, including the names of those who were still closeted. While at Dartmouth, D'Souza became the editor of a conservative monthly called The Prospect. The paper and its writers ignited much controversy during D'Souza's editorship. Later on, D’ Souza published a lot of write up with regard to his new life in America.D’Souza able to illustrate t he feelings and emotion of an immigrant coming from a third world country, for him (D’Souza), as a new comer in America he feel a typical experienced that alternate between wonders and delight. D’Souza added that, America is a country where all people has freedom, hard working, the community is organized, the economic is abundant, the roads are properly paved, telephone has dial tone, highways and sign board are clear and accurate. Moreover, the author claimed that American government provides an amazingly good life for their ordinary citizen.Rich people live well everywhere, but what distinguishes America is that it provides a remarkably high standard of living for the â€Å"common man. † According to him (D’Souza) that â€Å"a country is not judged by how it treats its most affluent citizens but by how it treats the average citizen†. The author added, as an immigrant coming from a third world country, you cannot help noticing that America is a co untry where poor people live comparatively well; they had television sets and cars.Ordinary Americans not only enjoy security and dignity, but also comforts that other societies reserve for the elite. American worker particularly in construction regularly earned 4$ for a cappuccino, where maids drive nice cars, where plumbers take their families on vacation to Europe. If this luxurious living in America as compared to the living in the Third world country, all of us can noticed that huge gap. Because according to the author, the life in the Third world country was miserable, people are struggling for their basic existence, it is not that they don’t work hard.On the contrary, they labor incessantly and endure hardships that are almost unimaginable to people in America. In the villages of Asia and Africa, for example, a common sight is a farmer beating a pickaxe into the ground, women wobbling under heavy loads, children carrying stones. These people are performing arduous labo r, but they are getting nowhere. The best that they can hope for is to survive for another day. Their clothes are tattered, their teeth are rotten, and disease and death constantly loom over the horizon. For most poor people on the planet, life is characterized by squalor, indignity, and brevity. The author sited some problem with regard to the situation of a Third world country are their basic infrastructure is abysmal. The roads are not properly paved, the water is not safe to drink, pollution in the cities has reached hazardous levels, public transportation is overcrowded and unreliable, economic is unstable and there is a two-year waiting period to get a telephone. The poorly paid government officials are inevitably corrupt, which means that you must pay bribes to get things done. Most important, prospects for the children’s future are dim. Dinesh D'Souza has elaborate many reasons why America is so great, he was able to discussed some issue with regard to America’s equality, pursuit of happiness, the ethics of work, religious liberty, ideals and interest and American’s virtue. According to the author, American critics alleged that the history of United States is defined by a series of crimes, slavery and genocide.American critics even point out a demand for apologies for these historical offenses and seek financial reparations for minorities and African-American. But the truth is that American has gone further than any society in establishing equality of rights. As documented by William Mcneill in Plagues and People, it was determined that numbers of Indians did perish as a result of their contact with whites, but most of them died by contracting diseases such as smallpox, measles, malaria, tuberculosis for which they had not developed immunities.Surely, all of this is relevant to the reparations debate. A trenchant observation that this issue was totally healed is the fight of Muhammad Ali against George Foreman for the heavyweight tit le, for which this battle was held in the African nation of Zaire. The issue with regard to slavery proved to be the transmission belt that brought Africans into the orbit of Western prosperity and freedom. Blacks in America have a higher standard of living and more freedom than any comparable group of blacks on the continent of Africa.D’Souza, stated that all this allegation is not strictly true, for a few decades now we can see blacks and some minorities have enjoyed more rights and privileges than whites. The reason behind this is that America had implemented affirmative action policies that give legal preferences to minority groups in university admission, jobs and government contracts. The author illustrates the pursuit of happiness in America because it offers more opportunity and social mobility than any other country. As a matter of fact, most societies offer limited opportunities for and little chance of true social mobility.Even in Europe, social mobility is relativ ely restricted. On the other hand, D’Souza discussed the ethic of work in America that gives a worldly focus in which death and the afterlife recede from everyday view. The people gazed are shifted from heavenly aspiration to earthly progress. In America, American Founders are responsible for the change, drawing from the inspiration of modern philosophers like Locke and Adam Smith. The American Founders knew that they could not transform human nature, so they devised a system that would thwart the schemes of the wicked and channel the energies of flawed persons toward the public good. The religious and ethnic difference in America does not lead to extreme violence; there was generally no framework fro people to coexist harmoniously, although America has a lot of religious groups, such as Hindus, Muslims, Irish Catholics and Irish Protestant, Jews and Palestinians and etc. The government still managed to balance the culture and religious difference of their citizen. One reason that separation of religion and government worked is that colonial America was made up of numerous, mostly Protestant sects. The Puritans dominated in Massachusetts; the Anglicans, in Virginia; the Catholics were concentrated in Maryland; and so on.The second reason was, the American Founders were able to avoid religious oppression and conflict ii which they found a way to channel people’s energies away from theological quarrels and into commercial activity. D’Souza concluded his write up that America is the greatest, freest, and most decent society in existence. For him, America is an oasis of goodness in a desert of cynicism and barbarism and the history will view America as a great gift to the world, a gift that Americans today must preserve and cherish. He imagines that, if ever he remained in India, what probably is his life now?Would he find and married a woman who was identical of his religion, socio-economic and cultural background? Would he certainly become a medical doctor, an engineer or a software programmer? For him, as a writer, he considers his life as a destined one, the opportunity to migrate in America became his bridge to gain his success in life today. Bibliography Bookstove, Nov. 16, 2007. Are Professional Athletes Role Models - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1345 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/05/06 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Role Model Essay Did you like this example? Are athletes role models? That’s the big question that a lot of people try to answer. Athletes do a lot of extraordinary things in their sport. High flying dunks, coast to coast rushes down the ice for a spectacular goal, and amazing bending free kicks from 40 yards out. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Are Professional Athletes Role Models" essay for you Create order This can be why they are idols to a lot of kids. Kids idolize Lebron James because of what he can do on the court. Though he can also be a role model to people of all ages what he does off it. Yes, there are many athletes that have done very unacceptable and horrendous crimes and acts. Though this should not overshadow what many athletes do outside of their profession or even inside of it. They should be considered role models. Sports can be a way out of bad places for many kids growing up. Being in a bad situation, living in a rough neighbourhood, or just not having the right mindset. Having good role models in a sport can help lead kids into it. Many start playing a sport from following in the footsteps of an athlete they idolize. In the mid 2000’s, Sidney Crosby influenced so many kids to lace up the skates and play. Sid is an incredible role model. His whole career no things negative about him have arose that have impacted him as a person. He has stayed out of the public eye and shown hard work and dedication to the sport. This can show kids to not only work hard in sports but life in general. Showing that hard work can get you to whatever your dreams are. Players stories can inspire people that are in a bad place. You see it all the time of players growing up in a small trailer to making it to the NFL (Jarvis Landry). To have players like this to follow can set the right tone for kids. In the media you see stories all the time of players doing bad things and making bad decisions. This can be looked at players shouldn’t be idolized by people. The perspective that should be looked at is it teaches people on how you shouldn’t be acting at your job and outside of it. Especially in the NFL there are a lot of situations that are brought up where domestic abuse has occurred. Just recent A video of Kareem Hunt (Former RB of the Kansas City Chiefs). It shows him confront a woman, pushing her and kicking at her while being heled back. This happening while being intoxicated (Belson, Nov. 30, 2018). This whole situation showing kids how you shouldn’t treat women and the consequences of it. He has since been released from his organization and most likely won’t be picked up by any other teams. This is no different then what would happen to someone at their workplace. They would be fired from their position and would be hard to get another job. As much as people want to say that athletes aren’t role models. This can be looked at as its showing kids what not to do, in their life and allowing them to follow other players that have a positive impact. The media portrays all these incidents in the right way that, they are always bad. Showcasing that it is not acceptable at all. So, with this happening every kid thinks they are the â€Å"bad guy† and their favourite player may be someone like Crosby that shows ex ceptional leadership and hard work. The whole point of this paragraph was to show that even though there are negatives that happen, it allows kids to learn from it. As well they are learning important qualities through the role models in sports that they follow. The players with a positive impact are shown so well that they make every kid want to be looked at that way, while disgracing the people that make bad decisions. There are so many things that athletes do outside of sports or in them that get recognized. Small things that always show a very positive impact. While Donovan Mitchell was out at the apple store he overheard that a man didn’t have enough money for his phone to be repaired (who was slow in development, said by his brother in a tweet he posted about it). So, he covered the cost for him. This is something that says great about someone’s character as many people and athletes would just ignore it and not think twice about doing it. A big thing about it as well is that he did it without having any cameras around him and didn’t say anything about himself doing it. This speaks levels of his character. As well he is heavily involved in the community and hosted the Strikes for Kids Utah Bowling Classic in February to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake City (Chiari, Aug. 2, 2018). Then there are big things that athletes do for the community. Take Russell Wilson for example, every Tuesday he goes and visits a children’s hospital, on his free time since becoming an NFL player. He has well gives first class seats to armed forces veterans. PK Subban, donated $10 million dollars to Montreal’s children hospital and Andrew Wiggins who is donating $22 (his number) to help underprivileged kids to gain better access to organized sports for every point he scores (Chiappelli Oct. 27, 2018). In the 2017-2018 season he scored a total of 1,451 points, if he averaged around that this year his total donation would be $31,922. LeBron who has his LeBron James Family foundation which has been around for a decade. The main focus is to help children’s education is rough areas. He opened the I Promise School, in Akron, Ohio (his hometown) to help children at risk (Kolur, July. 29, 2018). This is what a great leader and role model is. Yes, he is the greatest basketball player of all time, won many awards and championships but it’s his impact off the court that speaks volumes. To use his platform and wealth to bring awareness and help all these kids in needs is not only things that kids should try to follow in. No matter how big or small their impact is, doing something positive goes a long way. More athletes should follow these athlete’s footsteps because they have left a great impact on the community which is what being an athlete should be about. With this massive platform they have they can create such a positive impact on this world that they can change it for the better in realizing the opportunity they have. If I was a parent would I be happy if my kid’s role model was an athlete? Someone like LeBron or Sidney Crosby? I would love that. These players show so many good qualities and create such positive impacts that they can help lead kids down the right path. Bringing them into a sport, drawing them away from all the negatives surrounding them. Influencing people to start to do more things to help people out, no matter how small. Showing them that hard work pays off and you need to earn what you want through determination. People look at good teachers, siblings, parents, a motivational speaker or someone who has grown their business from nothing and now is very successful from hard work. So why can’t athletes be looked at as role models? Citations Belson, K. (2018, December 01). Kareem Hunt Is Cut by the Chiefs After a Video Showed Him Attacking a Woman. Why Did Lincoln Issue a Proclamation Suspending Habeas Corpus

Shortly after the start of the American Civil War in 1861, President of the United States Abraham Lincoln took two steps intended to maintain order and public safety in the now-divided country. In his capacity as commander in chief, Lincoln declared  martial law in all states and ordered the suspension of the constitutionally protected right to writs of habeas corpus in the state of Maryland and parts of the Midwestern states. The right of writs  of  habeas corpus  are granted in Article I,  Section 9, clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution, which states,  The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it. In response to the arrest of Maryland secessionist John Merryman by Union troops, then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Roger B. Taney defied Lincolns order and issued a writ of habeas corpus demanding that the U.S. Military bring Merryman before the Supreme Court. When Lincoln and the military refused to honor the writ, Chief Justice Taney in Ex-parte MERRYMAN declared Lincolns suspension of habeas corpus unconstitutional. Lincoln and the military ignored Taneys ruling. On Sept. 24, 1862, President Lincoln issued the following proclamation suspending the right to writs of habeas corpus nationwide: By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation   Whereas, it has become necessary to call into service not only volunteers but also portions of the militia of the States by draft in order to suppress the insurrection existing in the United States, and disloyal persons are not adequately restrained by the ordinary processes of law from hindering this measure and from giving aid and comfort in various ways to the insurrection; Now, therefore, be it ordered, first, that during the existing insurrection and as a necessary measure for suppressing the same, all Rebels and Insurgents, their aiders and abettors within the United States, and all persons discouraging volunteer enlistments, resisting militia drafts, or guilty of any disloyal practice, affording aid and comfort to Rebels against the authority of United States, shall be subject to martial law and liable to trial and punishment by Courts Martial or Military Commission: Second. That the Writ of Habeas Corpus is suspended in respect to all persons arrested, or who are now, or hereafter during the rebellion shall be, imprisoned in any fort, camp, arsenal, military prison, or other place of confinement by any military authority of by the sentence of any Court Martial or Military Commission. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington this twenty fourth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, and of the Independence of the United States the 87th. Abraham Lincoln By the President: William H. Seward, Secretary of State. What is a Writ of Habeas Corpus? A writ of habeas corpus is a judicially enforceable order issued by a court of law to a prison official ordering that a prisoner must  be brought to the court so it can be determined whether or not that prisoner had been lawfully imprisoned and, if not, whether he or she should be released from custody. A habeas corpus petition is a petition filed with a court by a person who objects to his own or anothers detention or imprisonment. The petition must show that the court ordering the detention or imprisonment made a legal or factual error. The right of habeas corpus is the constitutionally bestowed right of a person to present evidence before a court that he or she has been wrongly imprisoned.

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold Essay Example For Students

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold Essay Like Water for Chocolate is a tell-all tale about Tita, a girl that deprived of her love Pedro, held down by the constraints of a mother too bitter to let anyone else love, and generations of traditions based on taking care of mothers until death. Mama Elena enforces the fact that Tita will not be able to fall in love and marry because her duty falls to her to take care of her until death. Deep inside, Titas yearns to be free of it all no matter how young she may be or what generations may have set for her. Heartbroken and alone, it becomes a fight to keep her forbidden love alive, while knowing that her own sister will marry her love. Examining the restraints of her love and the family honor that she has to uphold creates the hearth of how family honor cant easily be lived up to. Tita fights for what she wants, and since birth, she has been hooked to the kitchen. She grew up on love and she grew to know love and the kitchen go hand in hand. And before my great grand-mother could let out a word or even a whimper, Tita made her entrance into this world, prematurely, right there in the on the kitchen table amid the smells of simmering noodle soup, thyme, bay leaves,Tita had no need for the usual slap on the bottom, because she was already crying as she emerged, maybe that was because she knew that it would be her lot in life to be denied marriage, (Esquivel, 6). Looking back at this, it can be said that Tita harbors a love that cant be changed. She knows what she wants and fears not to go after it, even during birth, love pulled hard enough to make her feel, experience what she could not experience. Even birth could hold her back from fighting for what she wanted love. Another question that arises is family bounds. If given a choice, Tita will do whatever it takes for her love. She says it herself that if there was no Mama Elena, she would have run away already with her true love, Pedro. Family honor diminishes years later when Mama Elena dies. Free of a constraint on her love, life and well-being, and free to do as she chooses, Tita has sex with her love Pedro while her fiancà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ John Brown is away. On both ends, it looks bad for Tita. Tita engaged to someone that loves her very much, makes it hard for her and she disowns the family name by getting married when she lost her virgin. From the other end, Titas love for Rosuaras husband, Pedro, looks better for he falls short for love for Rosuara. It looks bad for Rosuara because shes his wife and she claims that she will become the laughing stock of the town. Im painfully aware of the role you put me in, when everyone on the ranch saw you weeping at Pedros side, holding his hands so lovingly. Do you know what that role is? Laughingstock!..I have some self-respect left! Let him go to a loose women like you for his filthy needs, but heres the thing: in this house I intend to go on being the wife, (Esquivel, 214). To coincide with the darkness of it all, sex outside of marriage, a tradition that culturally is forbidden to all Spanish families creates more tension between fighting for love and carrying on family honor. .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 , .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .postImageUrl , .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 , .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5:hover , .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5:visited , .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5:active { border:0!important; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5:active , .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5 .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u51a6496be7b813e0426f04e125bd01e5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The novel by Bram Stoker EssayOutraged even in death, Mama Elena comes back and scolds Tita for disowning her family name. But nothing! What you have done has no name! You have forgotten all moralityYou have blackened the name of my entire family, form my ancestors down to the cursed baby you carry in your belly, (Esquivel, 173). Yet, Tita know that what she does is wrong, but her love for Pedro grows infinite. Even with her love for Pedro, Tita realizes that she is forced to see if love with Pedro seems to be the right choice. What seems right to her may not be, and without looking at people outside of her love with Pedro, she embarrasses the family name. It is important to understand that once family honor is lost in an environment surrounded with infidelity, it becomes a struggle and even impossible to gain back. In Titas case, she lost her family honor when she had sex outside of marriage, making it know to the town. Despite this, John still wants to marry her, and it will never change the fact that she disowned the family name. Likewise, in Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Angela has sex with an unknown person. Infidelity and virginity became a deciding factor as to marriage in this Spanish town and Angela fell short. The person that took Angelas virginity never came to light, however, Angela knew of a perfect way to restore the family honor lying. The life of an innocent man claimed the price of her lost virginity. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the matter of restoring the family honor revolves around a life that became a trophy, a claim to family honor. Angela was one of the prettiest women that Purisima del Carma, gave birth to. All the men loved her and her virginity was the biggest thing that the family could carry on their name. By the will of herself and a stranger, Angela lost it. Never to be claimed again. Never to be pure again, Angela still married Banyardo San Roman gave her family everything in addition to expecting that he would marry someone pure. On her wedding night, she lost her family honor, because she failed to perform the proper way that a pure woman was to perform. And they taught her old wives tricks to feign her lost possession, so that on her first morning as a newlywed she could display open under the sun in the courtyard of her house the linen sheet with the stain of honor, (Mà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½rquez, 42). Sent home full of shame, her twin brothers make it a task to fulfill the family name by killing Santiago, the one tagged for this outrageous mock. Refusing from being the laughing stock of the town, and refusing to fall refuge to a mockery of the town, the brothers plot to kill, without slight consideration of the consequences. Angela hurt a family tradition and a Spanish tradition of many centuries by losing her virginity, marrying and lying about it. On her wedding day, Angela appeared sacred to finishing what she started but her families honor depended on the last hours leading to the next morning after her marriage. On the other hand, the fact that Angela Vicario dared put on the veil and the orange blossoms without being a virgin would be interrupted afterwards as a profanation of the symbols of purity, (Mà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½rquez, 46). Despite the fact that Angela was fully aware of her lost possession, she covered it up with no considerations to her family name. Because she covered it so carefully, she could wear a symbol that was associated with purity. Protecting the family honor becomes the motives behind the Vicario brothers and their killing of Santiago Nasar. After Angela lost her only possession, it became the brothers duty to restore the family name by revenge. The brothers killed Santiago in front of everyone to show that there is no mercy, to show to everyone that the family name is restored as all the people of the town were there to bear witness to. Yet, years later, images of Santiago that day haunted them. .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 , .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .postImageUrl , .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 , .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229:hover , .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229:visited , .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229:active { border:0!important; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229:active , .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229 .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udcd96f467e95eb41ec29932772c48229:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A Demon Goes To Kill Death EssayChronicle of a Death Foretold and Like Water for Chocolate are displays of Spanish tradition for many years. In Like Water for Chocolate, the De la Garza family faced widespread humiliation because Tita was one to break tradition. She stepped out of line and followed her heart despite the fact that it may have cause harm to the family name. Two things that she did caused her to lose her family name: sex outside of marriage and getting married and having a relationship when tradition rules love out. On the other hand, Angela did one thing which caused her to lose her families name and her lost possession. It seems however, that Angelas famil y did whatever it took to make sure that family name was restored even if it was claiming the life of someone else. A Spanish traditions show that sex and marriage makes a family pure. When purity and honor to a family member becomes a lost possession or a boundary being tested, a tradition dating back to generations before goes sour, only to harm future generations. In this case, when family honor gets lost, it causes a generation struggle, and in the end, a life becomes a token or victory is claimed.

Of Mice And Men Essay Essays - English-language Films,

Of Mice And Men Essay The scene that was most memorable to me in this play was when Lenny and Curley`?s wife shared a conversation while the others were away. It started with Lenny moping around about the rabbit he had killed and then Curley`?s wife joined him. This scene ended in a surprising way, but in my opinion many interesting things were discussed about the concept of life. I was extremely surprised with the ending of this scene because when the conversation began I predicted that it was the start to a close relationship between the two of them. During this conversation they discussed issues such as life and dreams. At first Lenny refused to open-up. " George says I aint to have nothing to do with you-talk to you or nothing. " He was very reluctant to talk to her or share anything with her. She was the complete opposite. Curleys wife was looking for someone to talk to. As the scene continued, Lenny relaxed and was able to talk and listen to her. Curleys wife began by asking Lenny questions. As she continued walls were torn down and she was able to get closer to him. Then she told him about her life. " I get lonely K.. You can talk to people, but I can`t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How`d you like to not talk to anybody? " It was hard for Curley`s wife to get Lenny to talk but eventually he told her about his rabbit and other things about his life. " We gonna have a little place-an rabbits. " In the end Lenny became overly excited and ended up killing Curleys wife. From this, I gathered that Lenny had never been so close to anyone, especially anyone of this opposite sex. This gave him such a great feeling that he did not know how to deal with it. The moment he felt Curleys wife moving away, he acted on his inner feelings and he was frightened. The scene portrayed a good example of the interaction of two complete strangers, it was interesting to see how they shared things and opened up to each other. Part Two: This scene is related to the theme in different ways. I think that it incorporates three main aspects of the theme. It is related to belonging, loneliness and dreams. All three of these are active issues in society today. In this scene, Lenny and Curleys wife were able to discuss and show the audience how the theme tied in. When the two of these characters started talking to each other, they were both lonely. Curleys wife did not have anyone to talk to, and Lenny had George as a friend but I do not think it was the type of companion that he needed. In this case the theme of loneliness was brought forth. At first the two of them were lonely and deep within both of them wanted someone to talk to. When the two of these characters began talking, they were given a sense of belonging. Lenny was able to feel the feeling of trust and he was able to learn how to listen to someone. It was not something he was used to. He was used to listening to George, but often it was commands and rules. Curleys wife was used to listening to Curley, and she was not really able to say what she wanted to do. I thought it was good for both of these characters to be able to feel what it is like to have someone care and talk to. This scene subtly touches the theme of dreams. They discussed dreams that both of them had, and were in a way able to bring them alive by talking and embellishing about them. In todays society it is important to feel wanted. Loneliness is not something that anyone wants to feel. Every person should also have goals and dreams, and they should be able to talk about them without someone telling them it will not happen. It is essential that everyone has something to look forward to in life and knows that there are people that do care about what happens to them.
